Plants can be ordered to pickup locally, and we offer some bare root plants for shipping in the southeast. You can find our table at local farmers markets in Ashe, Avery, and Watauga counties, at the High Country Food Hub in Boone. Whenever possible, we source our seed from farms and nurseries that are directly descended from known wild populations in North Carolina, specifically the Southern Appalachian and Piedmont ecoregions. We try to follow sustainable practices whenever possible, such as using containers made of recycled plastic or biodegradable fiber. Our nursery grows our plants from seed ourselves, and we do not use pesticides. We only sell plants native to North Carolina and the Southern Appalachians. Our goal is to provide high quality native perennials, grasses, and shrubs with maximum benefit to pollinators, beneficial insects, and other wildlife. When you plant a native plant, you support an entire community of native organisms.īug Lovers Native Plants is a small nursery based in the High Country of North Carolina. In addition, no non-native plant ever provides the full ecological benefit that native plants offer. Many supposedly sterile hybrids have proven, through cross-pollination and other means, to be able to produce fruit and spread. While many of these nurseries also sell non-native species, we encourage you to buy only native plants, which helps reduce the likelihood of spreading potentially invasive species. Please note that NCNPS considers all the species on the invasive list-including the so-called “sterile hybrids” of those species-to be invasive. The websites of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the North Carolina Botanical Garden contain additional lists of native plant nurseries. We take a nursery’s word on compliance with our requirements and have not visited each one for verification. Rank 1 plants are those that present the most severe threat to native ecosystems. Nurseries on our list only sell nursery propagated plants and do not sell any plants listed as Rank 1 on our list of NC invasive exotic plants. This listing is provided for those who wish to buy NC native plants from NC nurseries.
